How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19

Everything you need to know about finding Diamonds, mining efficiently and choosing the right Y-Level.

Want to know how to find Diamonds easily in Minecraft? Finding Diamonds used to involve doing the same thing no matter which version of Minecraft you were playing on.

Since then, however, several updates have drastically changed how world generation and Diamond spawning works in Minecraft.

Read on to find out how to find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19, as well as how to find Diamonds in earlier versions of Minecraft. We'll also cover the best methods for mining Diamonds so you can get powerful weapons and armour as quickly as possible.

Diamonds in Minecraft 1.18 and 1.19

Minecraft 1.18 made several very important changes to Minecraft's world generation.

If you're playing Minecraft 1.18 or later, you can go below Y=0 and into negative coordinates. Below Y=0, you'll find the usual ores, including Diamonds, embedded in Deepslate blocks instead of regular Stone blocks.

💎 Key information: Diamond generation becomes much more common the deeper you go. For modern Minecraft versions, deep underground mining is the key to finding Diamonds efficiently.

See the graph below for details on where you can find the highest concentration of Diamonds and other resources:

Diamond starts generating at Y=15 and increases in frequency the further down you go.

To know what Y-Level you're on, press F3 to bring up the coordinates display. The second number next to "XYZ" is your current Y-Level.

Recommended Y -57
Mining range -58 → -51

However, if a Diamond is about to be placed next to an open-air block during world generation, it has a chance of not spawning. This makes Diamonds harder to find in caves.

💎 Quick tip: If you want to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds, spend some time digging tunnels through Deepslate instead of relying only on natural caves.

In summary: to find Diamonds quickly, head as far down as you can safely go and start mining long tunnels.

How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.17 and Earlier

If you're playing Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, Diamond Ore can be found in every Overworld biome between Y-levels 1 and 15.

💎 Best range: Diamonds spawn most often between Y=5 and Y=12.

No matter what version of Minecraft you're playing, Diamonds normally spawn in small veins of up to 9 blocks at a time.

Very occasionally you'll find larger veins made up of multiple veins touching each other, but Diamonds are still relatively rare.

Best Method for Mining Diamonds

Diamond Ore can only be mined with an Iron Pickaxe or better.

As of Minecraft 1.18, Diamonds are much less common in open spaces such as caves. Because of this, strip-mining in straight lines is one of the methods you can use to expose more blocks.

⛏ Recommended for Minecraft 1.19: Dig down to approximately Y=-57 and create a 2-block-tall tunnel.

Start mining out to either side using additional 2x1 tunnels, leaving a 2-block-wide gap between each tunnel.

Once you've mined the area around Y=-57, repeat the process around Y=-53. Mining at both levels lets you expose a large vertical range of blocks.

Tunnel 1 Y -57
Tunnel 2 Y -53
Gap 2 Blocks

If you're playing Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, you can use the same method around Y=6 and Y=10.

Watch out for lava. While mining, it's a good idea to keep a Water Bucket with you because pockets of lava can appear underground.

🔥 Don't forget: Bring plenty of torches to light your tunnels and prevent hostile mobs from spawning in dark areas.
